I just found the most awesome web site! The Dharma Trading Company The link will take you to a technique and information index with tons of how to's for Batik, Silk Painting, Tye Dye etc. etc., but I encourage you to check out their entire site. Here's where you can get all those great colors, and they have start up kits for very reasonable prices too! Peace Baby, Right On! :)
These instructions come from the Rit Dye handout.
Always begin with clean garments made of dyeable fabrics
(not polyester or acrylic).
Prepare dye bath as instructed on package. For bright
or dark colors, add 1 cup salt to the hot dyebath.
Band, pinch, bundle or fold fabric and tie off tightly with
strings or rubber bands.
Place in dyebath making sure to immerse all areas for 10-15
minutes. (Note: The longer you keep a garment in the dyebath,
the more intense the shade will be.)
Remove garments from dyebath. Immerse in warm water
and mild detergent. Rinse well in cool water until water runs clear.
Remove ties.
Dry on clothes line or in dryer. Press with hot iron
to help set color.
Basic Tie Styles
Rosette - Pinch up a section of fabric and tie tightly with
rubber band. For concentric circles or "sunburst" effects, make several
rossettes on garment.
Twist - Twist the entire garment tightly and secure the ends
with rubber bands or string.
Marble - Crunch garment into a bundle. Randomly wrap
cotton strips around garment in criss cross manner.
